the lord of the rings

1978

The Lord of the Rings is a 1978 American-British-Spanish animated high fantasy film directed by Ralph Bakshi. It is an adaptation  of J.R.R. Tolkien's high fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings, comprising The Fellowship of the Ring and the first half of The Two Towers. Set in Middle-earth, the film follows a group of hobbits, elves, men, dwarves and wizards who form a fellowship. They embark on a quest to destroy the one ring made by the dark lord Sauron, and ensure his destruction.

Before Peter Jackson took J.R.R. Tolkien's high fantasy epic and turned it into a major Hollywood blockbuster, Ralph Bakshi was the man who originally took the epic and introduced it onto the big screen. Ralph Bakshi encountered Tolkien's writing early in his career, and had made several attempts to produce The Lord of the Rings as an animated film before being given funding by producer Saul Zaentz and distributer United Artists.

This film is known for it extensive use of rotoscoping which I am quite a fan of although not everyone is. I do think this film does have some issues with its pasting but overall for the time it came out in, I do think it is a visually stunning film and for that reason I will give this film 4/5.
