ed wood

1994

Ed Wood is a black and white period comedy drama film directed and produced by Tim Burton. Starring Johnny Depp as the cult film maker Edward Wood Jr. This film concerns the period in Wood's life when he made his best known films as well as his relationship with actor Bela Lugosi (played by Martin Landau). The supporting cast also stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette, Jeffery Jones, Lisa Marie and Bill Murray.

As mentioned before, this film is shot in black and white as this film is based in a period of time when films were shot in black and white, so this style that Tim Burton decided to shoot adds to the overall tone of the film, but obviously this film is shot in the 90s, were films are very much well established in colour which adds a unique take to modern film making as it is rare to have black and white movies in todays generation, especially in Hollywood.

The performance that Johnny Depp gives as Edward Wood Jr is brilliant, as Depp completely throws him self into the role and added a lot of charm and character into him. Obviously this film does focus on Ed Wood as his name is in the title but one of the strong points of this film is Ed's charm and his witty sense of humour which is one of the reasons why this film works. This film also conveys Ed's passion for storytelling and filmmaking as it focuses on his facial expressions as he has a certain grin like an excited little kid. While creating his films, he shows a lot of pride in what he does and he seems to be very proud of the work he is creating although everyone else thinks he's creating garbage, which is an experience that a lot of people can relate to including me.

I think this film is a stunning piece of work as it explores character and wit and a unique touch to modern filmmaking, so for that reason I will give this film 4/5.
