I'M NOT THERE

2007

I'm not there is a 2007 musical drama film directed by Todd Haynes and co-written with Oren Moverman, inspired by the life and music of American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Six actors depict different facets of Dylan's public personas: Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger and Ben Whishaw all star as Bob Dylan.

The film tells its story by using non-traditional narratives techniques by intercutting the storylines of seven different Dylan-inspired characters. This film also gives the opportunity for different actors who you would not originally type cast as Bob Dylan such as Cate Blanchett who is a female playing a male role and at the time child actor Marcus Carl Franklin who has a different ethnicity to Dylan. Overall through out the film I fort Cate Blanchetts performance was the best part about this film which won her a best supporting actress award at the Golden Globes and as a female actress I was convinced that she was playing a male and out of all the actors playing Dylan in this film, she was the most convincing portrayal as Dylan.

Another thing I liked about this film is for each storyline for each character, they use different cinematic styles such as the scenes with Cate Blanchett uses black and white cinematography with more of an artsy style like an Andy Warhol art show for example, as for Richard Gere's scenes has more of a use of warm colours like oranges and reds and has more of a western feel.

Based on strong performances and stunning visuals I will give this film 4/5 as I also think it is a unique story to tell for a unique piece of cinema.
