the triplets of belleville

2003

The Triplets of Belleville is a 2003 French animated comedy film, written and directed by Sylvain Chomet. The film features the voices of Michele Robin, and Monica Viegas. There is little Dialogue as much of the narrative is conveyed through song and pantomime. It tells the story of Madama Souza, an elderly woman who go's on a quest to rescue her grandson champion, a tour de France cyclist, who has been kidnapped by the French mafia for gambling purposes and taken to the city of Belleville (an amalgam of New York City, Montreal and Quebec City).

I felt that the strongest point of this film was its visuals, as it is richly detailed and is loaded with surreal touches and the character designs are exquisite as they come in all different shapes and sizes as the character designs can be unusual looking for example some characters can be way too fat or way too skinny, sometimes a bit of both as it also adds that uncanniness to it which go's with that oddly surreal style the film portrays. As mentioned this film is extremely detailed in stylisation and another example of that is the shots as the film explores vertiginous angles that are right in your face.

this is a charming film to watch which can get brutal when it needs to and to this date with its stunning, detailed visuals and its distinctive character designs makes this film an exquisite piece of cinema so for that reason I will give this film 5/5.
