Last days of Coney island

Short Film 2015

The Last Days of Coney island is a 2015 American adult animated short film written, produced, directed and animated by Ralph Bakshi. The story concerns a NYPD detective, the prostitute he alternately loves and arrests, and the seedy characters that haunt the streets of New York City's run down amusement district.

Before making this film Ralph Bakshi had disappeared from the film industry for many years so this short was his big comeback. After many years of trying to get this film made by trying to sell the project to major production company's such as Pixar and DreamWorks from my understanding, Bakshi finally came to the conclusion of making the film him self with a small production. As Bakshi only had limited recourses and a limited crew of people working on this film that contributed to the films over all look which is a rough and very simple sketchy look to the film which I feel worked well for a small short film.

At the time of making this film Bakshi was very heavily into his painting which is one of the reasons why he disappeared from the film industry for so long. I felt that his painting techniques showed in this film as it felt more like an art film with character as the films visual look is full of layers and textures collaged together.

I do think this film does take a lot of time of getting used to as at the first of watching this film I felt it was all over the place which is the whole point of this film, as it tries to convey what a mad world we are living in and we are all a little all over the place.

I don't think this film is for everyone as it depends on the persons personal taste but as a piece of art I do think this is a great piece of work so I will give this film 3/5.
