9-11/9.11

Short Film 2007

9-11/9.11 is an animated short film directed by conceptual artist Mel Chin. The animation for this film was done by hand, in pencil.

The story has two settings, with one set in September 11 2001- New York City and the other set in September 11 1973- Santiago. Obviously September 11, 2001 is the terrible day that two planes hit the twin towers in New York in a terrorist attack that shocked the world. The story focuses on three characters;"Mike Smith" a retired American CIA agent who is recalling his secret past, specifically his experiences in Chile exactly 28 years before September 11, 2001, as well as a young Chilean immigrant named Salvador who wakes up in the New York apartment of his girlfriend, a bright young artist named Julia.

As mentioned, this film is animated by hand which is rare as we are living in the digital age. I believe animating by hand for this film was the best technique as it gives the film that personal human touch which suits the tone of the film as it is very much a human film which explores love, hope, family, power and manipulation.

Although this film explores a very upsetting topic, I do think it is a gorgeous piece of work with stunning visuals so I will give this film 5/5.
